Textures to a wall add an "old-world" feel, stucco, wash, mixture of techniques.  Richness. They are used for interest, to add dimension and warmth, and to disguise any flaws in existing walls.  Textures are a great way to hide high-traffic finger prints, smudges and cracks.  Texture (plaster or raise) can vary from flat, near flat to moderately raised, to very raised and pitted.  Most are porous and can be easily sealed to protect from moisture and stains.  time-tested.

below is a 1978, floor to ceiling, dark wood panel wall that we disguised with texture & slightly metallic paint.
Required no demolition.  Now it looks classic and can be easily painted over if the colors need to upgrade.
